Looking for a job? Your Appearance Matters!

You’ve spent years in college and tons of late nights studying for the sole purpose of landing your dream job…only to find out that what really matters is YOUR LOOKS?!

A recent Newsweek survey polled 202 corporate hiring managers, from human resource employees to senior level VPs about the role of beauty in the workplace. The results: it pays to be good-looking.

The poll suggests hiring managers care more about how physically attractive a candidate is than where they went to school! WOW! You’d think in the year 2012 we would be past this kind of discrimination, but apparently 64% of hiring managers believe they should be able to hire based on looks!

Here’s another interesting find from this survey: 61 percent of managers (the majority of them men) said it would be an advantage for a woman to wear clothing showing off her figure at work. Eew! And as if that’s not disturbing enough, the survey also suggests that women are discriminated against if they look too sexy. It’s a fine line! (There are plenty more interesting findings in this poll but I won’t get into them here.)

So, what can you do to make sure the hottie in the waiting room doesn’t get your dream job? While I don’t agree at all with discrimination in the work place, I do believe it is important to look like you could represent your potential employer in positive way. Perhaps companies want their employees to be a reflection of the company itself. A clean, polished employee might say “we’re professional and organized.” No matter what they’re judging on, don’t give them a reason to overlook your amazing skills. Don’t go overboard with hair and makeup but do look like you made an effort – perhaps that shows you will put effort into your work as well? Do NOT wear red lipstick or extreme color makeup. Go with neutral lips and lightly accented eyes to command their attention while you are talking. Dress professionally and make sure everything is clean and pressed properly.

Don’t throw your master’s degree out the window just yet! Confidence is key!
There have been many other polls that have suggested that confidence is attractive! So be confident in your training and experience and it will come across beautifully during your job interview! And when you land that coveted position and make it to the top, I’m sure you’ll hire based on skill and education rather than looks!

Sleep your way to beautiful skin and hair!

 Woman sleeping

The concept of “beauty sleep” isn’t an Old Wives’ Tale. Experts say sleep does affect your skin and has a variety of benefits.

When you sleep, your body is busy repairing itself. Not only is sleep beneficial to your health, but it also plays a vital role in your looks.  Getting the proper amount of sleep can be better than even the most expensive beauty creams and treatments!

Here are some of the beauty benefits of a good night’s sleep:

Eyes: The benefits of sleep on the appearance of your eyes are seemingly endless. Bloodshot eyes, bags, dark under-eye circles, and puffiness can all be reduced, if not completely erased, by getting enough sleep.

Skin Tone: Sleep can work as an instant relief for ashy, washed-out, and red skin. While you snooze, your skin cells turn over faster renewing itself, which helps you wake with a healthy glow!

Hair: Increased sleep has been proven to make your locks grow faster. While you’re dozing off, your body is busy repairing itself and secreting growth hormones, which work to improve hair health and promote growth.

Acne: Sleep deprivation has been shown to increase inflammation, as well as insulin resistance, both of which are major culprits of acne.  In addition, sleep helps to build a strong immune system, which in turn works to fight infection so that blemishes clear up more quickly. The moral of the story is sleep more, break-out less.

Wrinkles: While you sleep your body produces more protein, allowing cells to repair damage – including those harmed from ultraviolet rays (a.k.a sun damage) and pollution. Getting your 8 hours can also result in more human growth hormone production which works to retain skin elasticity, making you less likely to wrinkle.

Many factors are crucial for getting enough sleep. Here are some tips to get you well rested and beautiful!

  1. Chill out! To get your body relaxed and ready for a perfect night’s sleep, draw a relaxing bubble bath and sit with your favorite book before you snooze.
  2. Keep your bedroom only for sleep (and sex!) It’s best to leave work materials, computers and televisions out of your sleeping environment.
  3. The darker the better! A dark, cool sleeping environment is best for sleeping beauties. Invest in some black-out shades or just wear your favorite sleeping mask.
  4. Finish eating 2-3 hours before bedtime. Eating before bed can make you uncomfortable and keep you up. Plus, you want your body working on repair, not digestion. And definitely no caffeine before bed!

SLEEPING BEAUTY EXTRAS:

Silk Pillowcases

Kate Winslet and Reese Witherspoon are just two of several starlets who sleep on silk pillowcases and wake up looking perfectly coifed and creaseless. So, are they onto something? “Believe it or not, the weight of your head pushing your face against the pillow will create what are called sleep wrinkles and can worsen existing lines. So to prevent sleep wrinkles and to help delay worsening of existing facial lines, use a silk pillowcase.  Silk is also a strand savior for brittle, damaged hair!

Sleep also increases skincare’s efficacy so slather on your favorite night cream! Before resting your beautiful face be sure to clean off all makeup and apply your night cream. Choose a cream rich in anti-oxidants for faster cell turnover or a deep moisturizing cream for an extra dewy glow the next morning.

This is a very potent nighttime moisturizer and anti-oxidant booster that helps to mend lines and wrinkles.

Nighty night my sleeping beauties!

How to Hide a Hangover

portrait of a young woman with her hand on her head

Last night was Fabulous…you danced, you sang, you toasted.  Oh yeah, and let’s not forget that awkward kiss with Ted from accounting after your third Martini…OK,  fourth. Eek!

Now it’s 9 am, and you look and feel like you’ve been hit by a bus!

While I can’t help you undo your deeds from a crazy night, I can help you erase the signs of the hangover from hell.

STEP 1: WASH AWAY THE EVIDENCE! After a long night of dancing, sweating and perhaps being in a smoke-filled room, you’ve got plenty of build-up on your skin, which makes it look dull and could lead to a breakout — too bad you didn’t remember to wash your face before passing out!

Wash face with cold water and your favorite cleanser. If you have time, exfoliate for a deeper clean.  The cold water will help to wake you up and also help reduce puffiness.

STEP 2: DE-PUFF. To get rid of dark puffy bags under your eyes fast, place two spoons in your freezer for a couple of minutes, then place over eyes for an instant wake-up call with major de-puffing action. Next, apply a de-puffing eye cream. Try Benefit Depuffing Action Eye Gel. This cooling gel de-puffs and has a “secret ingredient”  that promotes firming!

Step 3: REHYDRATE.  Alcohol dehydrates skin, making you look dull and tired. So, drink up! Drinking water the morning after helps flush your system of alcohol so you’ll feel less hungover. It also rehydrates skin so you look better. Sports drinks are also great for rehydrating because they replenish electrolytes!

Step 4: REFRESH. While drinking water will help to rehydrate you from the inside out, your skin will still need an extra boost so apply moisturizer generously the morning after! For a quick “pick-me-up” grab  CLARINS Beauty Flash Balm. It’s made to eliminate all signs of fatique. It brightens and tightens for a more refreshed look!

Step 5: REVIVE. Bring yourself back to life with some light colors and alert peepers.  Before applying makeup, put a few drops of Visine in to whiten bloodshot eyes. Avoid heavy makeup and dark colors this morning, which will only make you look more tired. Instead, go with light colors to appear more fresh, natural, and alert. Avoid matte foundations and powders on dehydrated skin. Instead, go with a tinted moisturizer or a more dewy foundation. Pair light pink cream blush and eyeshadow with a swipe of lip-gloss for a natural,  glowing effect.  Curl your eyelashes for a more alert look and add some light mascara.

STEP 6:  HELP YOUR HAIR. A smoke-filled environment  leaves hair dry, flat and smelly…with no time to wash and blow dry, I recommend spraying in a leave-in conditioner to revive dull strands (and help it smell better.) Pull into a high ponytail — this will give you an instant face lift, making you look more alert!

The rally is an annual eight day cross country car rally that includes over 100 vehicles! The route spans between New York and Las Vegas. Fame Pictures, Inc

Alright, my partying beauties, time to go out there and face the world (and Ted from accounting.) Don’t forget an aspirin and big sunglasses of course!
